A2 develops the foundations of behavior-oriented self-optimization. In the first phase, we investigated exploration strategies for distributed systems. These strategies enable mechatronic systems to recognize correlations between its behavior, the current environment, and the level of achievment of its current objectives. In the second phase planning methods are developed. The idea is to analyze alternative activity sequences in order to determine the system’s objectives under consideration of possible future situations. A2 also develops the Active Pattern of Self-Optimization (APSO), which provide a comprehensive documentation of the methods developed in project area A. This documentation integrates the methods into the development process.
The aim of A2 is the development of behavior-oriented methods for the execution of the three steps of self-optimization (situation analysis, determination of objectives, and behavior adaption). Behavior-oriented methods apply a blackbox modelling of system functionality and can work without explicit modelling of internal causalities. Behavior-oriented selfoptimization enables the solution of such problem, where the internal causilities can hardly be modelled or the calculation efforts of such models are to high. Behavior-oriented methods establish a cognitive system, which enable mechatronic systems to evolve during operation and to adapt themselve better for their current environment and tasks. Furthermore, the methods devloped in the projects A1 and A2 are refined regarding the conceptual design phase and thus enable the integration of the developed methods into this important phase.
Hybrid planning for mechatronic systems
Subsequent to the first phase, where the focus was on exploration strategies to learn correlations between the system’s objectives and the enviornment, we implement the cognitive function planning. Overall, the objective is the definition of a hybrid planning, which enables to integrate the continuous behavior of mechatronic systems into efficient discrete planning methods. Thus, the complexity of planning can be handled.
Approximation of continuous behaviors is the foundation of continuous planning. It determines systems activities, which handled like state transition during discrete planning. At the same time, each activity is assigned to a continuous process. During plan execution, these continous processes are applied.
Multiagent planning for mechatronic systems
Discrete planning encompasses methods for the coordination of submodules and the coordination of autonomous systems. For these two entirely different coordination problems planning process based on multiagent-systems are developed.
The discretation of activities in planning enforces plan deviations. To handle this risk two planning strategies were developed: probabilistisc planning and knowledge based planning. These methods place emphasis on environmental influences towards the systems.
The application of methods and algorithms developed in project area A is supported by active pattern of self-optimization. These active patterns describe possible implementation of the process of self-optimization. To enable the use of active patterns and to describe cogntive aspects of the mechatronic systems, the active patterns include a new aspect, called functions.
